Ted Beargeon, Concept Artist, aka Hobby Shop Ted
1. What is it you do on a daily basis? If you've been reading these developer diaries closely you might think that I start out the day with Mike Phillippi giving me a hard time about politics, religion, current events and then wrapping things up with off-color simian jokes ... but that was a long time ago and in a different set of cubicles.
Since then the concept art team has doubled in size and Mike has leveled up to Lead Concept Artist. Now my days start off with Mike Phillippi giving me a hard time about inappropriate monkey humor and threats of sensitivity training.
2. What was your 1st game industry job? How long have you been with Mythic? Have you worked anywhere else? What other jobs have you held in the industry?
Mythic is my first game industry job. I joined the team about three or so years ago. Before that I had many day jobs and a few freelance gigs for the most part with the fine people at Wizards of the Coast.
3. What was your "welcome to the game industry" moment when it hit you that you were really making games for a living?
It actually hit me during the interview. I was being taken around the office on a sort of introduction tour and I noticed many of the cubicles and offices had massive SciFi/Fantasy collections on display ... it was unlike any work environment I had ever experienced.
4. What cool things in the Warhammer universe do you hope to bring to life?
Some of the things I love about Warhammer would be the fluff, the dark humor ... It's dark, it's gritty it's politically incorrect ... But most of all, I really love the art ... Karl Kopinski, Paul Dainton, Ian Miller, John Blanche ... etc.
5. Do you collect Warhammer figures?
I've collected a seriously unhealthy number of miniatures ... really. There is enough metal in my cubical to crush a small village. Right now I'm obsessing over a massive Ultramarine force with Vostroyans sort of just over the horizon beckoning me to explore the path to Imperial Guard glory. And then of course there's my Inquisitorial temptation ... Ordo Malleus ...
6. What are your key influences when making the game?
My biggest influence is the illustrators who have filled the army books, rule books and codexes with inspirational art for the last 25 years.
7. What is the biggest problem with current MMO's you hope to fix with WAR?
It is my hope that WAR will contribute to a movement away from the current MMO template.
8. What are your favorite video/computer games of all time?
Quake III Team Arena, Gears of War, BF2 and BF2142!
9. What games are you playing right now?
Right now? I'm not. But if I were, I'd be playing Call of Duty 4. And I'm looking forward to Battlefield: Bad Company.
10. What game should the reader be playing if he's not?
Warhammer tabletop ... seriously ... go buy the Battle for Macragge boxed set.
11. What music are you listening to right now?
iTunes just introduced me to Korpiklaani, Eluveitie and Amon Amarth so that's mixin' with Slayer and ManoWar and the always touching cover of "When you wish upon a star" by Gene Simmons.
12. Is there a recent movie you've seen or book/comic you read that you'd recommend to others?
Movie - The Mist Comic - BOOM! Studios Warhammer Comics! Book - The Fountainhead also on iTunes.
13. Anything else you want to add?
Ummm ... ok. How about: "In the Emperor's Name Let None Survive!" ... Thanks Alex.
