Field Marshall
What is it you do on a daily basis?
My job is to make things look cool, and more importantly,
Warhammer cool. I spend most of my time thinking about
what things look cool and why they look cool. Whereas
another person might spend their days at work thinking
about how best they can expedite an order or shipment,
I spend many hours thinking how best to mutate a zealot’s
face into the most painful and disturbing configuration possible.
What is your background?
I spent many years in the frozen wastes of the Plateau of Leng
studying with the ancient ritual masters in the ways of the Old
Ones. Soon, very soon, great Cthulhu will rise from the lightless
abyss, and you will know the bliss of oblivion. Uhhhh, sorry,
I went to a 4 year liberal arts college where I was chastened
constantly for drawing naked ladies of “unrealistic” proportions.
What excites you about the Warhammer property?
Paul Dainton’s paintings mostly and the Skaven; god how I love them.
What was your “welcome to the game industry” moment when it hit
you that you were really making games for a living?
That would have to be when I got the call that I was hired to work
on a game that I had been playing since I was 13 (that’s Warhammer,
in case you didn’t figure it out). I ran around the house screaming
like a madman, the neighbors probably thought someone was being
killed, and on any other day they would have been right to think
so...
Do you collect Warhammer figures? What army do you play?
I do. I play a bit of Warhammer fantasy, Skaven being the instrument
of domination in that instance. But 40k is my true love and the
Imperial Guard lay down their lives at my whim. Fear the tread of a
billion jackbooted heels!
What are your key influences when making the game? Anything besides
Warhammer?
Warhammer paintings. And besides that, insects. I’m constantly
trying to put insect like things in my concepts, to the great
consternation of my bosses.
What are your favorite video/computer games of all time?
Half-Life 1, if you haven’t played it, I know, and the ninjas are
approaching your house as we speak.
What music are you listening to right now?
The Imperial March from Star Wars. I listen to it in the car, and
pretend I’m flying a Star Destroyer. I make my girlfriend activate
the turbolasers.
Is there a recent movie you’ve seen or book/comic you read that
you’d recommend to others?
You should really be reading B.P.R.D. It’s got Lovecraftian monsters
vomiting their innards over entire cities.
